Cathie Black to Head NYC Schools
November 9, 2010In a press release from the mayor's office, Bloomberg calls Black a "superstar manager" who has succeeded spectacularly in the private sector.
"She is brilliant, she is innovative, she is driven - and there is virtually nobody who knows more about the needs of the 21st century workforce for which we need to prepare our kids," Bloomberg said.
Black, who served as President and Publisher of USA Today for eight years in the 1980s, became the first female publisher of a weekly consumer magazine when she took over operations at New York in 1979. At Hearst, Black oversaw the launch of O, The Oprah Magazine and steered the company through the tumultuous early years of the Internet and into the transition to digital. She is also former CEO of the Newspaper Association of America.
As chancellor, Black will oversee a student population of over 1.1 million. She replaces Joel I. Klein, who will be joining News Corp. as senior advisor to CEO Rupert Murdoch after eight years running the city's schools. Black will be the first woman to serve in the position of New York Schools Chancellor.
" .... My main goal will be to build on the work that has been accomplished during the Bloomberg Administration, and Chancellor Klein's tenure," Black said in the press release. "I want to thank the Mayor for the privilege of joining his Administration and the great team of people who carry out the City's mission each and every day."
