New York, January 15, 2013—Hearst Magazines today announced the first-ever Hearst Fashion Hackathon during New York Fashion Week. For 24 hours on February 9 and 10 more than 150 developers will compete to create innovative fashion-focused apps and programs on API platforms from sponsors including Hearst brands (ELLE, Harper’s Bazaar, Cosmopolitan and Marie Claire), Amazon, Facebook, Google, Klout, Microsoft, Singly, Spotify and more.

Premier hackathon competition producer AngelHack will facilitate the event. Hearst Magazines President David Carey, Hearst Chief Technology Officer Phil Wiser, Melanie Schnuriger, general manager of fashion and beauty for Hearst Digital Media, as well as tech industry gurus and VCs will judge the finished products. The grand prize winner will be awarded $10,000 and the chance of a mentorship with Hearst Digital Media. Surprise guest appearances throughout the event will add excitement to the marathon session.

“Fashion and technology are ever-changing, evolving at lightning speed,” Carey said. “Our readers are passionate and well-versed in both, so it is a priority for us to continually provide new, first-to-market online and mobile experiences. The buzz of energy and creativity at this hackathon is going to be extraordinary and inspiring.”

“We’re constantly incorporating new technology to redefine the way readers interact with our brands and we’re always on the lookout for fresh talent,” Wiser said. “This event fosters innovation and big ideas—we’re expecting to be dazzled.”

The Hearst Fashion Hackahon (#HearstFashionHack) kicks off on Saturday, February 9 at 9:00 a.m., with welcoming remarks. Developers will start by pitching their ideas and forming teams. Coding begins promptly at 1:00 p.m. and submissions are due exactly 24 hours later. On Sunday, prototypes will be presented to the judges, with special consideration given to apps that utilize the latest in mobile technology, inventively connecting readers and editors in real time. Winners will be announced on the same day and prizes include:
