New York City, Oct. 6, 2014 - In the first nine months of 2014, 142 magazines launched, and 65 closed, according to MediaFinder.com-the largest online database of U.S. and Canadian publications. Compared to the same period in 2013, magazine closures are up, from 45 last year to 65 this year, and launches are down slightly, from 145 to 142.
During the first nine months of 2014, the top category for new launches was "regional interest," with 11 new titles such as Crain's 5boros, and Old Port. The next largest category was "health & fitness," with seven new titles, including Naturally Danny Seo. Magazines that ceased publication in the first nine months of 2014 include American Woodworker, Bop, and WWE Magazine.
In the business-to-business magazine sector, 31 new titles launched, such as Vapor Voice, during the first nine months of 2014, compared with 17 new titles in 2013. During the same period, 16 b-to-b titles closed, including Food Arts Magazine, while 11 magazines closed in 2013. In addition, Macworld dropped its print edition.
"It's encouraging to see magazine growth in the health category and the establishment of magazines covering new industries, such as e-cigarettes," said Trish Hagood, president of MediaFinder.com. "At the same time, the trend of dropping print editions continues with Golf World, Vibe, and XXL."
