Online and e-mail newsletters jumped from 1,053 to 6,055 over the last five years, while print-only newsletters decreased 43 percent from 7,395 to 4,180. At the same time the number of newsletters in both print and electronic formats remained about the same, 4,859 vs. 4,949, according to the Oxbridge Directory of Newsletters 2009 edition, released this week. The number of newsletters in the 2009 edition totaled 15,343 vs. 13,197 in the 2004 edition.
Over the last year, online and e-mail newsletters grew slightly from 5,485 to 6,055, while print-only versions of newsletters continued to decline, dropping from 4,873 to 4,180.
Legal newsletters continue to outnumber any other category in 2009, with 1,212 newsletters. In addition to the Legal category, other top categories are Computers & Automation (1,039), Investment (930), Medicine (801), Health & Fitness (530) and Education (406). The same categories topped the list in 2004: Law (1,023), Medicine (715), Computers (664), Investment (603), Education (425) and Health (395).
"Overall, newsletters are holding their own in this media-threatening economy. There were 15,185 newsletters in the 2008 edition of the directory, and 15,343 in 2009," said Trish Hagood, president of Oxbridge Communications. "The newsletter industry had its Internet wakeup call years ahead of the magazine and newspaper industries, with many newsletters moving to online formats."
