Stelter Highlights the Importance of Planned Giving to Houston Nonprofits

Education for Donors Key to Success in Improving Financial Literacy for Planned Giving

May 3, 2012 By Press Release
Des Moines, Iowa, Apr 25, 2012—This week more than 100 nonprofits across the Houston Metro Area and surrounding areas will be represented at the Planned Giving Council of Houston (PGCH) annual conference at the University of Houston (UH) on April 26, 2012. The Stelter Company, the leader in Personal Philanthropy marketing services, partners with many local Houston nonprofit organizations to raise awareness around planned giving and help educate donors about the benefit of incorporating deferred gifts into their overall financial plans. Nonprofits, planned giving professionals and philanthropists will gather at this Houston event to spur conversations around this year's theme, "Planned Giving...Now More Than Ever."

"By nature, we are a very giving society with the vast majority of Americans making regular donations to charities," said Bev Hutney, director of innovation and research at The Stelter Company. "However, Stelter's research shows that less than 10 percent of Americans have named a nonprofit in their will. We suspect that Americans' hearts are in the right place when it comes to deferred giving options, but they simply need to be better educated on the topic."

As fundraising professionals and financial advisors meet with their donors and clients during today's challenging economic climate, they understand that it is a great time to plan and review ones financial and philanthropic goals. Many donors today have a better understanding of their financial picture than they did five years ago. Stelter recently launched Gift Illustrator ( www.giftillustrator.com ), an interactive online tool that helps donors understand the various methods for supporting a nonprofit through a planned gift. Donors are often surprised to see how a planned gift allows them to give much more than they might otherwise have thought possible while offering them potentially significant financial benefits.

"The Planned Giving Council of Houston is very avid about supporting our nonprofit community with ways they can stay current on ever-changing laws and legislation with finance, taxation and nonprofits in general," says Nancy B. Shelby, president of the PGCH. "We come together at this conference to help these remarkable organizations effectively communicate to donors on responsibilities, financial literacy and programs and services that benefit our entire community."
