Blogs as News Sources for Radio Stations?
June 9, 2008 From Bob Sacks
I had a futuristic experience yesterday. I was listening to Sirius radio. I don’t remember which station I was listening to, and that may be relevant here, but the event should be startling to journalists everywhere. It was the top of the hour and they started to deliver the news. The first news headline was delivered and it was stated that this news was from So&So.com’s blog. The next news item was delivered and it was attributed to Peter&Pauls.com, another blog. In fact, all the news on this channel was attributed to the blogosphere.

This seems to me to be an unprecedented event. Even if

McMurry’s Secret
October 2007 From Publishing Executive
Seven years ago, CEO Chris McMurry began offering an anonymous online survey to the employees of his Phoenix-based custom publishing firm, McMurry Inc. The questions on what now is known as “The Best/Worst Survey” are simple: What are the three things you like most about the company, and what are the three things you like least about it? The things that survey respondents like stay in place. For what they don’t like, the employees are asked to offer suggestions on how to fix them. They also have to provide the pros and cons of the proposed solution. “We wanted to know what was on

Doing Social Networking Right
May 31, 2007 From Rob Yoegel
It was a privilege to be welcomed as a guest contributor in Business Common Sense by its author, creator and a mentor of mine, Denny Hatch. Denny hired me 11 years ago as an associate editor when my wife was 5 months pregnant and one month after being laid off. He taught me more about direct marketing than any textbook or college professor could ever do, impressing upon me that a ‘sale only begins when the customer says yes’ and that the ‘customer is always right.’

He is simply a fountain of information, but isn’t afraid to tell you what he doesn’t know

In a time when publishers everywhere are scratching their heads in search of ancillary profits, brand extensions and a steady stream of advertisers, Earl Graves Ltd., Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia and Shutterbug magazine are examples of companies prospering from an approach that others in the industry could do well to notice: broadcasting their brand. Black Enterprise magazine, a business and investment publication oriented toward African American professionals, corporate executives and entrepreneurs, has been Earl Graves Ltd.’s cornerstone for more than 35 years. With 3.7 million readers, the monthly magazine is a major player in the publishing industry. But Earl “Butch” Graves Jr., the company's

Entering the ‘Other’ World (Beyond Print)
February 2006 From Publishing Executive
It is the million-dollar question many magazine publishers are faced with: What does print media have over the seemingly endless array of digital media forms now in existence? After contemplation, the follow-up question is: How far should we extend our brand into that ‘other’ world? The world of digital delivery—of digital editions, podcasts, webcasts, television and extensive online coverage. While interviewing publishers and editors on the challenges magazine publishers face and what they project for the future, it became clear that many in the business are walking a tightrope, balancing the viability of a printed product with the growing demand for more digital

The thunder of the line running down-field at kickoff. The clash of helmets ramming together. The stealth movements of a wide receiver. The mere mention of the National Football League (NFL) conjures up images of strength, speed and agility, so it makes sense that the talents showcased on the field are the qualities the league values as a business. Ready, set . . . wait "NFL Photos is the still photography division for the NFL," says Paul Spinelli, director of photographic services (NFL Photos), National Football League.
