383 Magazines Shuttered, 259 Launched in First Nine Months of 2009
The first three quarters of the year saw 383 magazine closures and 259 new launches according to a report this week from MediaFinder.com, which tracks U.S. and Canadian publications. Sixty-four magazines ceased their print editions but continued online during the same period.
Business-to-business publications accounted for 130 of the shuttered magazines, 75 of the new launches, and 24 of the magazines ceasing their print editions over the last nine months.
Of the 383 closures, Condé Nast closed four magazines including Gourmet, Cookie, Modern Bride, and Elegant Bride on Oct. 5. Other major consumer magazines folded included Country Home, Nick and Nick Jr., Hallmark Magazine, Travel & Leisure Golf, Style & Design, Southern Accents and Best Life.
The regional interest category led all categories with 15 new launches, while the food category was home to 14 new magazines. Thirty-one regional interest magazines did fold during this time though, which led all categories by a wide margin.
"While magazines are continuing to fold, there were many new launches this quarter, including Afar and Cesar's Way; and revivals, including Vibe and Jazz Times," said Trish Hagood, president of Oxbridge Communications Inc. and MediaFinder.
