Solutions Showcase: Digital Proofing Update
“The tools [that] allow you to see color accurately on your desktop are more affordable and accessible than ever,” says ICS’ Silverman. “A small amount invested in training and equipment will pay large dividends.”
Whether adjudicating hard or soft proofs, environment plays a critical role. “View proofs in a controlled environment with 5000K lighting, and replace the lamps in your viewers at the intervals recommended by the manufacturer,” Silverman explains. “The viewing environment is equally important for hard-copy and monitor proofing, and all proofing manufacturers have published guidelines based on ISO standards for viewing color images in print production.”
Publishers considering standardizing the way they view color across multiple departments or parties can invest in viewing stations from manufacturers such as Just Normlicht or GTI Graphic Technology Inc., which feature lighting that mimics the viewing conditions under which the printer will look at prepress proofs and press sheets.
A tip from New England Printer and Publisher (August 2007): Before making a purchase decision, “it is wise to request samples of your most challenging jobs and see if they make the grade.”
