Bonnier Sweden Division Surpasses 5 Million Downloads on Apps for Kids
(Press Release) New York, N.Y., Jan 24, 2012—The same Bonnier Sweden company that teamed with Parenting magazine on an app for children last year has passed the 5 million downloads milestone, just 10 months after launching its first app. The gaming developer of apps for kids, Toca Boca, is a division of Bonnier Corp.'s parent company in Sweden.
Of the more than 5 million Toca Boca downloads sold in more than 115 countries, approximately 2 million downloads have come from the U.S. alone. "The U.S. is, by far, our biggest market, in both revenue and downloads," said Toca Boca CEO Björn Jeffery.
Toca Boca's apps address the social, emotional and developmental needs of children with stimulating and age-appropriate games that don't involve winning and losing, and can be played independently or with family and friends.
In October 2011, Bonnier Corp.'s The Parenting Group partnered with Toca Boca to release Parenting's Birthday Party Playtime app. The app allows children to host their own virtual birthday party, while helping them develop key social skills by learning and exploring through role play. Parenting's Birthday Party Playtime app, available on the Apple iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch, is recommended for ages 3 and up and is available for download on the Apple App Store for $1.99.
Toca Boca's success can be attributed to several factors, including promoting new apps to existing app users and releasing a free Christmas version of one of its popular apps, which helped round out December as the best month to date. Jeffery said the most influential factor in Toca Boca's success has been "the power of free," which leads to word-of-mouth exposure.
Toca Boca's suite of interactive apps for children --- including Toca Tea Party, Toca Kitchen, Toca Hair Salon, Toca Store and Toca Doctor --- provide modern families with the opportunity to play together in a fun, creative and engaging way. "We're really happy and proud that families all over the world have learned to appreciate our digital toys to this capacity," said Jeffery.
