Cathie Black Named Chairman of Hearst Magazines
Cathleen P. Black, longtime president of the worldwide magazine group at Hearst Magazines, has been promoted to chairman, it was announced Monday. Veteran publishing executive David Carey will succeed Black as president.
"We are excited by the formation of this team at the top of our magazine company," Frank A. Bennack, Jr., vice chairman and CEO of parent company Hearst Corporation, said in a press release. "Cathie Black has brought strong leadership to Hearst Magazines for the past 15 years and having David Carey join her gives us the strongest possible management combination to lead our array of premium titles and our distribution and marketing services businesses at a time of great change and opportunity. We're pleased to welcome David, who is a Hearst alumnus, back to the company."
Black said the move has been in the works for some time. "Frank and I have been talking about this move during the past year and it seems like exactly the right time. I look forward to providing leadership and strategic advice to both David and the senior leaders as we work together to strengthen and expand our magazine brands, both in the U.S. and abroad."
Black, president of Hearst Magazines since 1995, oversaw the launch of O, The Oprah Magazine and, in October 2008, Food Network Magazine, which despite the recession saw circulation climb to 1.3 million by the end of 2009. Hearst Magazines has seen a 12 percent increase in advertising pages for the first half of 2010 compared to a year earlier, according to the company's press release.
In 1979, Black became the first-ever woman publisher of a weekly consumer magazine when she took the reigns at New York, and was president and publisher of USA Today and president and CEO of the Newspaper Association of America before joining Hearst Corporation. She has served as chairman of the Magazine Publishers of America and been honored with numerous awards from charitable and civic institutions.
Carey moves over from Condé Nast, where he has been group president since January 2008. Carey was vice president and publisher at the New Yorker for seven years, working with editor David Remnick to bring the magazine back to profitability, and led the launch of Portfolio. He was named Industry Executive of the Year by Adweek.
