Editor's Note: Greatness by Acknowledgement
There is an old saying that goes something like: “If you wish your merit to be known, acknowledge that of other people.” If that’s true, then by the time you’re done reading this issue, I should be one of the most esteemed people in the industry—almost this entire issue is devoted to acknowledging the greatness of others. It’s jam-packed with success stories, and it’s one of the most enjoyable issues we do all year.
For starters, this issue’s “Wagoners of Change,” feature showcases this year’s Publishing Executive Hall of Fame inductees (page 18), who are being honored for their career achievements and contributions to the industry.
Calling the inductees and telling them of their award is one of my favorite tasks. Almost exclusively, the inductees are humbled by the award and usually quite surprised by it. One year, however, when I called a Hall of Fame inductee to tell him he would be given this high honor, I was met with an ever-so-slightly annoyed response: “Well, it’s about time!” I laughed then, and it still makes me laugh now.
The truth is that, for many of our inductees, it really is about time—they’ve toiled for decades, often unthanked and underappreciated (like many in this business), and they’ve long deserved industry-wide recognition.
This year’s inductees are truly exemplary of not only the personal career achievements the Hall of Fame celebrates, but the level of camaraderie they have with their peers. They share their knowledge with others for the betterment of the industry, and their induction into the Hall of Fame is the industry’s show of appreciation and respect for all they have done.
The other acknowledgement of merit that you’ll find in this issue is the annual Gold Ink Awards winners (page 34). This year—the 19th for the awards—was marked by especially high competition. Judges seemed to have a particularly grueling time volleying over the most redeeming qualities of each of the very best entries, settling on Gold, Silver, Bronze and Pewter winners in each category. The companies who took home a Gold Ink Award this year have achieved something truly commendable. They have perfected the combination of teamwork, craftsmanship, technology and materials that results in printed excellence—no small feat indeed.
