110 New Magazines Launched in First Quarter 2009; 95 Others Folded
A report this week from MediaFinder found that 110 new magazines were launched during the first quarter of this year while 95 other magazines were folded during the same period. MediaFinder tracks U.S. and Canadian publications.
The three categories that led the way in number of new launches were health/fitness, home/furnishings and family, with eight new titles in each category. Regional and lifestyle magazines topped the list of ceased publications.
The 110 new launches is nearly one-third of the total number of new launches for the entire year of 2008 (335), as tracked by MediaFinder.
"We are encouraged to see 110 new magazine launches this year, showing the continued value of magazines. This figure compares favorably with new magazines launched in 2008 … ," said Trish Hagood, president of Oxbridge Communications, which owns MediaFinder.
High-profile launches from the first quarter included Purpose Driven Connection and Disney twenty-three. Closures included Domino, Travel & Leisure Golf and Tennis Week.
