Magazine Launches Outpace Closures in First Quarter of 2013
New York City, April 2, 2013 – In the first quarter of 2013, 27 magazines launched and nine magazines closed, according to MediaFinder.com—the largest online database of U.S. and Canadian publications.
The new magazine launches included Glam Belleza Latina, The Veil, Cruising Outpost, Politico Pro Magazine, and NSWF, representing the categories of Ethnic/Women, Bridal, Boating, Politics, and News. Among the nine magazines that closed were Garden Design, Coin Prices, and The Phoenix.
Compared to the same quarter of 2012, the number of magazine closures slowed slightly from 12 last year to nine this year. In 2012, new magazine launches in the first quarter numbered 52, compared to 27 launches in 2013.
“In the first quarter of 2013, we are witnessing a significant decline in new magazine start-ups compared to the same period last year,” said Trish Hagood, president of MediaFnder.com. “At the same time, it is interesting to see online publications such as Politico Pro and NSWF produce print magazines.”
Among business-to-business magazines, four titles launched including IR Quarterly, compared to eight titles launched last year. Two titles ceased last year, and none ceased this year.
