Magnificat Publishes A Book by Pope Francis
YONKERS, N.Y., Aug. 9, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Yonkers, NY - MAGNIFICAT, publisher of the monthly Catholic worship aid, announces the release of its latest book, In Him Alone is Our Hope, written by then-Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio. The text is a retreat the future pope gave to the bishops of Spain during Holy Week of 2006. Pope Francis, in the manner of St. Ignatius of Loyola's Spiritual Exercises, leads his brother bishops in a meditation on their vocation. He calls them to renew their understanding of what it means to serve in humble strength in a world obsessed with possessions and power.
By extension, he calls all of the faithful to pattern themselves after the Blessed Mother. In the moment of her life-defining decision, Mary reflects on "the great things our Lord has done," and courageously places her will into his. The title is a paraphrase from the Spiritual Exercises, and reflects Pope Francis' determination to remind the Church that we too are called to be instruments of God's will.
Not merely excerpts from his other writings, In Him Alone is Our Hope offers a condensed look into Pope Francis' thinking. As MAGNIFICAT publisher Pierre-Marie Dumont points out on the back cover, "In so doing, he offers us his vision of the Church, setting forth the outlines of what could well be the reform program of Pope Francis." Easy to read because it was designed to be delivered orally, a prayerful study will prove to be a profound source of spiritual enrichment.
In his foreword, Boston Archbishop Sean O'Malley, O.F.M. Cap., quotes from the new Pope's first general audience as he encourages us to "move beyond a dull or mechanical way of living our faith, and instead open the doors of our hearts, our lives, our parishes, our associations, going out in search of others so as to bring them the light and the joy of our faith in Christ."
