Magazine Launches Outnumber Closures in First Half of 2012
NEW YORK CITY, July 11, 2012—In the first half of 2012, 133 magazines launched, and 48 closed, according to MediaFinder.com—the largest online database of U.S. and Canadian publications.
The top categories for new launches were “regional interest” and “food,” with new titles such as Voice of San Diego Monthly and Louisiana Kitchen. In addition, Meredith is testing a print edition of AllRecipes.com. Another popular category was “home,” with new titles such as Domino Quick Fixes. Among the ceased titles were Reality Weekly and NFL Magazine.
Compared to the same period in 2011, the number of magazine closures slowed from 74 to 48 this year. The number of magazine launches in the first half of 2011 was 138 compared to 133 launches in 2012.
“Once again we are seeing fewer magazine launches this year over last year, but, at the same time, there are fewer magazine closings, indicating a stabilization in the magazine business,” said Trish Hagood, president of MediaFinder.com. “The luxury trend continues unabated and is resulting in the resuscitation of former titles such as M, Best Life and Elle Accessories later this year.”
Among business-to-business magazines, eight titles launched, such as Professional Yacht Broker, and two titles folded, Pharmaceutical Representative and Heat Treating Progress.
In the business-to-business magazine sector, 21 new titles launched, such as Collaborative Care and Border & CBRNE Defense, during the first half of 2012. During the same period, eight b-to-b titles closed, including The Grower and Successful Promotions. At the same time, IT World Canada, Inc. announced plans to cease all print editions of their publications, including CIO Canada.
