O Magazine App Launch Announced At Oprah Winfrey Keynote Discussion
An iPad app for O, The Oprah Magazine is slated for release Nov. 16, Editor-in-Chief Susan Casey told talk show host Oprah Winfrey at the 2010 American Magazine Conference in Chicago Tuesday.
Discussion of the magazine's digital future was part of a wide-ranging conversation between Casey and Winfrey, the closing keynote speaker at the annual conference hosted by the newly rebranded MPA - The Association of Magazine Media.
Winfrey said she believes the iPad will strengthen the magazine and book market by adding a new dimension to the reading experience.
"I think that it's part of the future," she said. "The iPad isn't the end of magazines—it's just ... another way to read."
She noted that, for example, "When you really love a book, you want to hold the book in your hands."
Discussing the upcoming launch of the Oprah Winfrey Network on cable, Winfrey said the sensibility behind the network and its programming was inspired primarily by the magazine's editorial approach.
"When I was first presented with the idea of creating my own network, [Discovery Communications CEO] David Zaslav ... came in holding an O magazine that his wife had given him, and he came in with this idea of using the information and the quality and the spirit of what we do in the magazine to create a network," she told the audience. "So that's what I'm looking forward to doing, executing that in a way that when you turn on that channel, just like when you read our magazine, that you never waste your time, that you come away with something that allows you to think differently about yourself, about the world, about other people."
O magazine, she said, allows readers to "hav[e] something that you can hold on to and come back to and reinforce your 'aha' moments for you."
