Rolling Stone Rides High on Multiplatform Advertising
Rolling Stone is reporting impressive jumps in advertising revenue so far in 2011, according to Min.
“Increase is coming from every major category: automotive, beer/liquor, consumer electronics, fashion and telecom,” Rolling Stone publisher Matt Mastrangelo told the trade website.
Multiplatform campaigns are driving the increases, Mastrangelo said, which on the print side add up to 221.2 ad pages through the March 31 issue, compared to 158.2 during the same period in 2010. The March 17 issue, featuring reality TV star Snooki on the cover, saw a 33.49 percent ad-page gain over the year before.
Rolling Stone's revenue jump has been helped by spring rock festivals, including South By Southwest, the Coachella Music and Arts Festival and the Bonnaroo Music Festival. Finalists in a RS-sponsored unsigned bands competition will perform in a battle of the bands at Bonnaroo, with the winner becoming the first unsigned band ever to appear on the magazine's cover. The contest is sponsored by Garnier Fructis.
