RR Donnelley Acquires Journalism Online
In a move furthering RR Donnelley's expansion into digital content management, the legacy printer and publishing services provider today announced it has purchased paid content subscription provider Journalism Online.
Managed by co-founders Steven Brill and L. Gordon Crovitz, Journalism Online offers a metered paywall service, called Press+, similar to the one just launched by the New York Times, where only the most frequent online viewers are charged. Newspapers currently using the service include The Commercial Dispatch in Mississippi and The York Daily Record in Pennsylvania.
"Our publishing customers continue to develop multi-channel advertising and editorial strategies and Press+ provides a valuable tool for monetizing content," Thomas J. Quinlan III, Donnelley's President and CEO, said. "... Press+ enhances our offering and opens new avenues for publishers to generate incremental subscription and advertising revenue."
Donnelley's suite of services for publishers has branched out in recent years to include content creation, digital asset management and subscription management. The company works with more than 60,000 clients worldwide.
Press+ offers a scalable model allowing publishers to test and implement paywall strategies. A recent study by the company found its customers did not see significant declines in overall website traffic.
"We are delighted to bring Press+'s innovative capabilities to RR Donnelley and look forward to engaging with the broad array of consumer and b-to-b publishers with whom RR Donnelley has relationships," Brill said.
