From the Editor: Same Old, Same New
Are you reinventing publishing? Whether it’s incremental change, or major redesign, our bet is you’re thinking about new directions for the future. In this issue, we look at a number of publishers and the different ways they’re exploring their own new directions.
You’ll read a selection of thoughtful interviews with industry innovators, from Prevention’s Anne Alexander to Livingly Media’s Tony Mamone. Our feature on business-to-business publishing looks at new business models and product development. And you can check out new products, new apps, and a round-up of some recent industry conferences in our Pub Buzz section.
In our September/October issue, James Sturdivant wrote about AR and NFC, saying that “publishers and developers see a world of potential in augmented reality and near field communication” and wondering, “when will the marketplace catch up?” Well, they say “practice what you preach,” so here we go. We at PE figure that as part of our role in introducing our readers to new technology, we ought to try it ourselves.
This month, we are excited to dip our toe into the waters of AR. We are pleased to partner with Layar to bring augmented reality to the pages of Publishing Executive. This month, as I mentioned, it’s just a toe dip, so only our cover is augmented. But watch throughout the year as we add more and more: to Pub Buzz, to features, even to ads.
On page 3 of our current (February 2013) issue, you will find step-by-step instructions to using Layar. Download the Layar app (available for both Apple and Android) and scan our cover as shown and see what pops up (literally!). Our journey begins!
