SWOP Publishes 10th Edition of Its Specifications
Specifications for Web Offset Publications (SWOP)—an industry organization promoting consistency and quality of advertising material in publications—launched the sale of its 10th Edition Specifications, currently available by ordering online at www.PrintTools.org. PrintTools is a new industry portal for specifications and tools, and is a collaborative effort between IDEAlliance (www.IDEAlliance.org) and the International Prepress Association (IPA), the association of graphic solutions providers.
To produce the 10th Edition, the Printing Applications Lab at Rochester Institute of Technology coordinated the print production of the 96-page booklet, with contributions from Flint Ink, Sun Chemical, Sappi Fine Paper, Tembec, Goss International, Böttcher America, Creo (a subsidiary of Kodak), Day International and Kodak Polychrome Graphics.
SWOP recommends specifications for the submission of advertising materials to all those involved in magazine manufacturing—including advertisers, advertising agencies, publishers, prepress service suppliers and printers. Since 1975, SWOP has set standards to help ensure quality and consistency in the print production of magazines. Its latest specifications serve as a compilation of all best practices achieved so far.
Over the past 30 years, SWOP Specifications have been updated nine times, chronicling the emergence of computer-to-plate technology and conversion to a 100-percent digital workflow, while documenting a marked decrease in the number of 'make good' ads.
In its first major update of the SWOP Specifications since 2001, the process proved to be an arduous task driven by key industry leaders who sit on the SWOP Rewrite Committee.
An electronic version of the specifications will be published in the near future, according to IDEAlliance. The 10th Edition Specifications costs $20 each, with the price decreasing for larger quantities.
