Featured Video: WSJ's Digits Discusses Apple Subscription Plan
Wall Street Journal News Editor Marcello Prince joins the newspaper's Digits team to discuss the significance of Apple's new subscription plan for publishers, which was announced Tuesday (and partially upstaged by Google's announcement of a rival subscription plan for Android devices a day later).
Prince discusses publishers' "mixed reaction" to the plan, which opens new opportunities even as it prevents full sharing of valuable customer data. Also touched on is whether publishers have something to fear from giving too much control to Apple, as many believe happened with the music industry.
Co-host Simon Constable incorrectly states the iTunes store is a "portal you have to go through." In fact, publishers selling app subscriptions on their own websites can handle those transactions themselves; subscriptions bought within an app, however, are subject to Apple's rules, including a 30 percent revenue share.
