When Size Matters
If bigger really is better, the International Holographic Paper Company must be the best—at producing notable holograms, that is. The dot-matrix designers recently produced the world's largest commercial hologram for Warehouse, a U.K.-based retail clothing store chain. The six ft.-display poster was produced by IHP's new hologram system, the iScan Interferometric Scanning System. Not only was the iScan able to produce a poster 20-times larger than any other commercial hologram, it was able to do it 500 times faster than ever before, and at a fraction of the cost.
The record-breaking poster was produced using two hologram masters that were shot in less than 10 hours by iScan. Once the image was chosen for the poster, a holographic pattern was embossed onto 85 lb. text paper and metallized. The paper was then silkscreened in six-color on a screen press (65 line screen) with UV inks that were used to enhance the special effects. A four-color process and two coats of opaque white were also done in-line in one pass to reduce production time. The paper was then laminated to B-flute corrugated and die-cut.
While conventional dot-matrix holography is typically a slow, time-consuming process, the iScan allows for faster output and eliminates post-production steps. In this case, with lasers shot directly onto the substrate, two separate, double-sided models were produced in a mere two weeks. "Before iScan, this project would have taken several months," comments Brian Monaghan, president of International Holographic Paper. "We were actually able to take the order in November, and get it sent out in time for the holiday shopping season." And with deadlines in tow for advertising agencies interested in appeasing client demands with innovative promotional tactics, projects of this magnitude are excellent tools for advertisers and clients alike to introduce something new, jokes Monaghan.
The final product featured shots of two models posing in Warehouse formal attire as part of a marketing campaign to attract customers to the department store's huge display windows. "It was really very neat and we received a lot of compliments on how great the poster looked in the store window. I guess people were really impressed with the quality as well…I heard that women were coming into Warehouse asking were they could find the holographic dresses," says Monaghan.
IHP's iScan is busy again with the production of the ubiquitous Elvis Presley
TV Guide covers, as well as standard poster-sized Elvis holograms currently being sold online. "I heard they're almost sold out," comments Monaghan, "And we're thrilled."
