Bonnier Loses $1.5M in Cyberfraud

Cyberhackers believed to have originated in China scammed Bonnier Publications out of $1.5 million last month, Media Ink has learned.

The thieves hacked into the email of then-CEO Dave Freygang and then sent two bogus instructions to an employee in the accounts payable department to ship the money to a Chinese bank via electronic transfers, sources said.

The emails were marked urgent and confidential, sources said. The FBI is said to be investigating.

Eric Zinczenko Named CEO of Bonnier Corp.

Bonnier Corp. chief executive David Freygang has stepped down from his position, passing control of the magazine company to executive V.P. Eric Zinczenko.

Freygang is retiring after a career of more than a quarter-century at Bonnier, the publisher of such special-interest magazines as Saveur and Field & Stream. Freygang replaced Terry Snow as C.E.O. in 2013 and named Zinczenko, who then led Bonnier's men's group, as executive V.P. of the entire company.

Zinczenko, 47, had joined Bonnier from Time Inc. in 2007, when the owner of Time andSports Illustrated sold its 18 enthusiast titles to Sweden's Bonnier AB. 

Men’s Fitness Deal Collapses Over ‘Disparate Evaluations’

Talks between Bonnier and American Media Inc. over the sale of Men's Fitness have broken down after the two side couldn't agree on price, Media Ink has learned.

Bonnier, which was negotiating to buy the AMI title, said there are "disparate evaluations."

The price tag was said to be in the $30 million range.

"I gave David [Pecker, CEO of AMI] a call this morning and said we're not going to pursue it," Bonnier Publications CEO David Freygang told Media Ink ina phone interview.

In 1993, the man who today serves as executive vice president of the magazine publisher Bonnier-he was then a junior salesman at Scuba Diving magazine-set his sights on a potential client who had placed ads in all of the publication's competitors but refused to take Zinczenko's calls.

Last week, Bonnier Publications, with headquarters in Copenhagen, announced it would be making several changes within its subsidiary companies. Jesper Buchwald, currently CEO of Benjamin Media, will be leaving to start a new E-Commerce department for the Bonnier Publications Group. Benjamin Media, which publishes lifestyle magazines such as M!Costumeand Bo Bedre, will have a new CEO in Niels Jespersen, who is currently CEO of Bonnier Publications' Norwegian operations. The staff changes will take place in September and October.

Bonnier Sells Ski and Skiing, Magazines Bought as Part of 'Time 18'

Bonnier Corp., the publisher of magazines such as Field & Stream and Popular Science, has struck a deal to sell Ski and Skiing magazines to Active Interest Media, the companies confirmed today.

The magazines' print business has diminished since Bonnier bought them from Time Inc. in 2007 as part of a $225 million deal for 18 enthusiast magazines.

Ad pages fell 33.7% at Ski magazine last year, a steeper drop than the 8.2% decline across magazines as a whole, according to the Publishers Information Bureau. Circulation has held roughly steady, averaging 456,945 in the second half of last year

Bonnier Corp. today announced that Terry Snow, CEO, has elected to retire effective January 14, 2013. Snow will be succeeded by Dave Freygang, who recently served as Executive Vice President for Bonnier’s Active Interest Division.
