The 2013 MPA/PBAA Retail Marketplace opened Monday and wraps up today in Philadelphia. Publishing Executive had the chance to sit in on some interesting presentations. (After all, they came to Philly — it’s the least we can do!)

Mary Berner, President and CEO of The Association of Magazine Media (MPA) started the conference off with her usual energetic call to action and to “innovate, innovate, innovate.” Next up, PE’s own Dr. Samir “Mr. Magazine” Husni led a panel discussion of magazine CEOs including David Carey of Hearst, Steve Lacy of Meredith, Bob Sauerberg of Condé Nast, and Efrem (Skip) Zimbalist of Active Interest Media.

The Publishing Business Conference & Expo, the nation's largest conference and expo for book, magazine and journal publishers, will take place September 23-25, 2013, at the New York Marriott Marquis Times Square. The Publishing Business Conference & Expo is produced each year by the Publishing Business Group and Book Business and Publishing Executive magazines.

AMC 2012 is wrapping up today on the left coast with the remaining attendees heading off on a field trip to the Facebook campus, a nice follow-up to last night’s inside peek @ Twitter. Blood orange vodka cocktails and tasty treats were enjoyed by all in Twitter’s spacious and funky former furniture warehouse/new space. I especially enjoyed the huge outdoor terrace (hey, Matt, why don’t we have one of those?) where I proved to be a ringer (sorry, Jesse!) at the beanbag toss.

Who needs publishers anymore, right? With all that great new technology for print and ebooks, are we just becoming obsolete?

Well I sure hope you’re all standing up and shouting “NO WAY!!!” But the fact is, we do have adjustments of one sort or another to make, and some of us are struggling to figure out how to remain relevant in a changing world.
