Samir Husni

At the 2013 Publishing Business Conference & Expo, Samir "Mr. Magazine" Husni and Bo Sacks faced off on the future of the magazine industry. Read the comic strip below to see how it played out and cast your vote for the winner.

The 2013 MPA/PBAA Retail Marketplace opened Monday and wraps up today in Philadelphia. Publishing Executive had the chance to sit in on some interesting presentations. (After all, they came to Philly — it’s the least we can do!)

Mary Berner, President and CEO of The Association of Magazine Media (MPA) started the conference off with her usual energetic call to action and to “innovate, innovate, innovate.” Next up, PE’s own Dr. Samir “Mr. Magazine” Husni led a panel discussion of magazine CEOs including David Carey of Hearst, Steve Lacy of Meredith, Bob Sauerberg of Condé Nast, and Efrem (Skip) Zimbalist of Active Interest Media.

To accompany his column in the April 2013 issue of Publishing Executive, Samir "Mr. Magazine" Husni prepared a video explaining his unique take on the importance of print to magazine publishing.

Across the conference, magazine publishers embraced aggressive flexibility. That seemed to be the message of every executive speaking at the 2010 Publishing Business Conference & Expo (PublishingBusiness.com), held from March 8-10 at the New York Marriott Marquis Times Square: That they're working across every platform to give readers what they want to read, where they want to read it, and sell advertisers robust, reportable, multichannel marketing campaigns.

I often agree with Bob Sacks, our longtime columnist, and a friend and mentor. (He is much older than me, you know.) But after reading his column in this issue, "Paranoia in Publishing" (page 42), I felt the need to address a few things.
