Time's Last EIC Dismembers Pope's Miter. What It Means…
What we have before us now appears to be a prophesized case of impending lost integrity. You read this article and make your own conclusions as to what the former editor-in-chief of Time Inc. meant by her actions. For me the conclusion and the meaning of the forewarning is clear.
I would add that editorial integrity is in some ways very much like virginity. Once it is lost, it is no longer retrievable. Let's be honest, there are some sectors of the magazine industry that lost their virginity many years ago. But most sectors have resisted the monetary lure of duplicity.
Those who practice the new black arts now called by the nom-de-plume native advertising,do so at their own peril. Like many an old alchemy formula for turning lead into gold, the dark arts of native advertising can, and most likely will, blow up in the new age bogus scientist's face. I for one say good riddance to the practitioners of such foul and unethical sciences.
I suggest to you all that the path to riches for the publishing industry isn't found in deception and deceit, but rather in trust which builds loyalty that the readers bestow onto their beloved editorial products. Lose that hard won loyalty and you have lost your franchise to more worthy contenders, of which there are many.
Cheap thrills and fast bucks feel good as they are happening, but usually don't form the lasting relationship necessary for long term media survival.
