A Much Needed Resource for the Industry
Welcome to “Environmental Sustainability in Printing & Publishing,” a central source for information and resources for publishers and printers across all segments of the industry, brought to you by trusted industry publications Book Business and Publishing Executive.
I took the helm of Book Business and Publishing Executive in March 2004. Since then, the magazines have increased their coverage of environmental sustainability as it affects publishers and printers. Why? Because our readers have asked for more coverage.
Now, we’re providing this Web site, Environmental Sustainability in Printing & Publishing, as a resource for our readers and the industry at large to help them stay current on options in environmental sustainability and related issues that affect their publishing and printing businesses.
Growth Comes Full Circle
The topic of environmental sustainability has been experiencing slow, steady momentum among an expanding pool of consumers and investors—socially responsible investment funds and indexes that employ sustainability performance ratings now represent in excess of $2 trillion in holdings, according to an article in Book Business. As interest has grown in the public and investment sectors, not only has it become more financially appealing to businesses to be environmentally sustainable, but more vendors have, in the meantime, stepped up offering new solutions.
In the printing and publishing industries specifically, more options in paper are now available at competitive prices. Paper mills and some printers are investing in processes to improve their own environmental impact and to provide their sustainability-conscious publishing clients more peace of mind in their partnerships.
As more options become available, implementing “greener” practices without breaking the bank becomes an option for more publishers. It’s a complete cycle.
Some of the momentum in the publishing industry at least can be attributed to the efforts of advocacy organizations, such as the Green Press Initiative, and Co-op America and its WoodWise/Paper Program. The Green Press Initiative, for example, was instrumental in advancing the Book Industry Treatise on Responsible Paper Use, a formal effort among many constituents of the book publishing industry to improve the industry’s environmental impact. And it offers support to businesses that commit to this effort. (You can find more information about the treatise on this Web site.)
