ASBPE to Present Lifetime Achievement Award to Design Expert Jan White
Jan White, a magazine consultant, design guru and Publishing Executive magazine columnist, will be presented with the American Society of Business Publication Editors’ (ASBPE) Lifetime Achievement Award (LAA) at the Azbee Awards of Excellence banquet August 2 at New York City’s Roosevelt Hotel, announced the ASBPE this week.
This marks the first time the lifetime achievement recognition will be awarded to an individual from the design side of the business.
“The key point in Jan being chosen has to do with him being on the design side,” says Robin Sherman, associate director and newsletter editor for the ASBPE. “He’s the first ASBPE Lifetime Achievement Award honoree on the design side. Why? Because of all the things he’s done to help both editors and artists work together, learn each others’ vocabulary and craft, and so on. … Jan has more understanding of journalism than any designer I’ve met.”
White, who has penned Publishing Executive’s “Designed for Success” column since 2006, stresses the importance of a synergistic relationship between editors and designers.
“Word people must think visually and picture people must think verbally,” White says. “As professional communicators, our task is to achieve what our clients [readers] need, blending each of our specialties into one product.”
He added that the honor came as a real surprise. “… what’s so gratifying about this is the surprise. All my working life I’ve been ranting about the compulsion to link the designer into the editorial team,” he says. “But I really thought I was bashing my head against a brick wall, because the chasm between our professions isn’t all that much narrower now than it was 50 years ago. And yet suddenly, out of the blue, here’s proof that the message is getting through. Word-people actually recognizing the value of an artist? I mean, wow!”
