Atlantic Media Announces New Defense, National Security Brand
WASHINGTON, D.C., May 14, 2013 - Atlantic Media President Justin B. Smith announced today that it will launch Defense One, a new digital-first media brand serving the U.S. defense and national security community, later this summer. Defense One will deliver high-quality news and analysis to defense leaders and stakeholders navigating the unprecedented transformation of U.S. defense strategy and operations.
The launch of Defense One is the latest move by Atlantic Media to create digital brands that identify and serve specific audiences of influential readers. Just as The Atlantic attracts an influential audience from around the world; the recently-launched Quartz, (qz.com) serves global business leaders; and National Journal Group and Government Executive Media Group target opinion leaders in government and politics, Defense One will target influentials in the national security community.
"Defense One will bring to this important market the disruptive combination of intelligent, indispensable journalism and leading edge digital expertise that is the hallmark of all of Atlantic Media's properties," said Justin Smith, President of Atlantic Media. "We see Defense One as a major growth venture and a core Atlantic Media brand."
Defense One will serve the entire national security leadership community, across the executive branch— Defense leaders (military flag-officers, civilian DoD leadership, National Security Council and staff), Congress (House and Senate Armed Services and Appropriations Committees), and others who play an influential role in this sector, such as contractors and think tanks.
Defense One will meet an important need for defense leaders, helping them to identify and understand the trends and ideas that will define the U.S. defense posture of the future. Its editorial approach will focus on tracking and analyzing four core trends affecting the defense environment: budget uncertainty, emerging national security frontiers, new management paradigms, and the opportunities brought by emerging technology. Defense One aims to disrupt the legacy-heavy defense media environment with a leading-edge digital offering that will be fully optimized across all tablet and mobile devices. Unprecedented in the defense media market, Defense One will launch an iPhone and Android App in the Fall, followed by the release of a special eBook Series by the end of the year.
