Exclusive interview: Jay Lauf on heading up Atlantic Media Company properties, including Quartz
The Atlantic Media Company announced today that Jay Lauf, Vice President and Publisher of The Atlantic, has been promoted to Senior Vice President/Group Publisher of Atlantic Media Company and Publisher of new global business news venture Quartz. In his new position, Lauf assumes the company's top sales and marketing role for all Atlantic Media brands while continuing to helm The Atlantic's suite of print and digital products. Before his tenure at Atlantic Media, Lauf was Publisher of Wired.
Quartz, which launches Sept. 24, has been doing some high-profile hiring and will have journalists reporting from 115 countries and speaking 19 languages, according to a press release announcing Lauf's promotion.
Publishing Business Today caught up with Lauf—a panelist at last week's Publishing Business Virtual Conference & Expo—this morning to ask him about his new gig and what it means for The Atlantic Media Company going forward.
Publishing Business Today: What's your primary mission as Senior Vice President/Group Publisher?
Jay Lauf: It's sort of twofold. One is to focus on enhancing some of the larger strategic partnerships across the organization. We have a lot of companies targeting all the various audiences that our different publications, websites and events handle, so part of the job will be to look for ways to leverage those properties in an integrated way for those clients. The other is really to reinforce and instill best practices across the organization.
PBT: What would be an example of best practices?
Lauf: Making sure we are a client-centric sales and marketing organization, thinking of clients first, being consultative, leveraging some of the successful things we have done at the Atlantic around content integration and helping the other publishers really maintain and operate with those kind of tenets in mind. Both the tenants of client-centricity and deploying best practices that lead to great partnerships.
