Publisher of Wine Spectator Acquires Malt Advocate, Inc.
(Press Release) NEW YORK (Business Wire)— M. Shanken Communications, Inc. has announced the acquisition of Malt Advocate, Inc., a publishing and events company specializing in high-end whisky and other spirits. The deal brings Malt Advocate magazine and WhiskyFest events under the M. Shanken umbrella, creating new synergies for both companies.
John Hansell will remain as publisher and editor of Malt Advocate magazine, and Amy Westlake will continue as WhiskyFest director. Malt Advocate has been published for nearly 20 years and is the most respected name in the world of whisky and other fine spirits. WhiskyFest events are held each year in New York, Chicago and San Francisco, and have sell-out crowds. The company's operations will still be based in Emmaus, Pennsylvania.
M. Shanken Communications, Inc. publishes consumer and trade magazines including Wine Spectator, Cigar Aficionado, Food Arts, Market Watch and Impact. The company also stages events around the country, including Cigar Aficionado's Big Smokes, the Wine Spectator's Wine Experiences and Grand Tours.
Marvin R. Shanken, chairman, said that the integration of the Malt Advocate and WhiskyFest into M. Shanken Communications would create a natural combination providing numerous opportunities to build on the links between the worlds of cigars, fine wines, gourmet foods and spirits.
"John and Amy are pioneers in this industry and highly regarded," commented Marvin R. Shanken, CEO of M. Shanken Communications, Inc. "We are proud to have them on board with us. Their creations Malt Advocate and WhiskyFest are benchmarks."
Hansell echoed Mr. Shanken's sentiments. "Amy and I are very proud of our efforts promoting the whisky industry, both with Malt Advocate, which will be celebrating its 20th Anniversary in 2011, and the 25 WhiskyFest events we have hosted over the past 12 years," notes Hansell.
"Our activities dovetail perfectly with those of M. Shanken Communications, Inc. from a publication and events standpoint. There are definite synergies that will be achieved between the two companies. The M. Shanken Group will take Malt Advocate magazine and our WhiskyFest events to levels that we could not have achieved on our own. We are very excited about our future together."
