Publishers Gain 'Admission,' Hobnob With Movie Stars
News came yesterday from Mark White at U.S. News & World Report that their "Best Colleges" book is playing a cameo role in the new Tina Fey movie, "Admission," which arrives in theaters next Friday. White sent along a picture of the book being held up by actor Wallace Shawn—either to make a point or stop a bullet, we're not sure.
Kudos to them! But here is where it gets weird. Also yesterday, our publisher Matt Steinmetz received a call out of the blue from a props manager working on "The Good Lie," a film currently in production starring Reese Witherspoon. He was looking for authentic copies of trade magazines from 2001 to use in the film, and Matt was more than happy to oblige with dusty issues of BookTech and PrintMedia—the precursors of Book Business and Publishing Executive. Look for these toss-ons appearing onscreen in your local multiplex in a year or so.
So, how much is this free publicity worth? Hard to say, but with magazines featured prominently in another scene from "Admission" (thanks again to White for sending along), we're beginning to think Fey or director Paul Weitz are big magazine fans.
Hopefully students in mass media 20 years from now won't be studying "Admission" to find out what newsstands used to look like.
