Sports Illustrated Scores Dan Patrick
Sports Illustrated (SI) and SI.com have agreed to a deal with Dan Patrick, among the most recognizable names in sports media, to make him a senior writer for both the magazine and the Web site. The agreement is significant for SI, as Patrick was employed for nearly 20 years by SI’s main rival, ESPN.
“Dan Patrick is a sports genius,” says Terry McDonnell, editor of the Sports Illustrated Group. “He’s fast, funny, analytic, old-school informed and, most important, he believes in the values reflected in the sports he covers. He will bring all of that to SI.”
Highlights of the agreement include a weekly column written by Patrick for SI beginning in January; daily blog entries by Patrick; and regularly scheduled appearances by SI writers on Patrick’s nationally syndicated radio program, “The Dan Patrick Show.”
In addition, the partnership with Patrick will enable Sports Illustrated’s Digital Group to host and produce DanPatrick.com, Patrick’s Web site featuring streaming audio of his radio show, his own blog, and other sports-related content.
“I couldn’t be more excited to work with the Sports Illustrated franchise, which, in my mind, represents the pinnacle of sports journalism,” says Patrick. “… This deal provides us with a great opportunity to cross promote our content in print, online and over the airwaves.”
