What a Magazine Feature Package Looks Like in 2016
Recall the quaint days when a magazine feature package meant reserving a few additional pages in the page plan and spending a few extra bucks on artwork? Today, a “package” is much, much more.
Yesterday fitness mag SHAPE announced the launch of its multiplatform SHAPE Slim Down program geared toward helping readers reverse the impact of too many holiday eggnogs and snickerdoodles.
The program, part of the publication’s January/February issue, exists across print and digital, as well as a companion ebook. Anchored with a 23-page section in the print magazine, SHAPE Slim Down is a comprehensive source of information and inspiration on being more healthy, showcasing a workout and eating plan, enhanced with video, social media motivation, and progress tracking in a calendar.
“We had that domino effect in mind when we envisioned our special SHAPE Slim Down section, which is dedicated to what most of us are looking for this time of year -- to lose weight and get our health back in balance after the holidays,” said Elizabeth Goodman Artis, editor-in-chief of SHAPE in a press release on the program.
This is what a magazine feature package looks like in 2016: print and digital, video and ebook, intended to provide a full spectrum experience tied to the lifestyle and desires of an audience -- arguably a role that no other medium can fulfill. While SHAPE is certainly not the first magazine to produce a multiplatform feature, it’s a reminder of how the notion of a magazine-as-experience is coming to life.

The program lives across the brand’s print and digital platforms, as well as through the companion e-book, available on Amazon.

“Weight loss is not only about your specific goals, but the surplus benefits that come with new workout routines and healthier habits,” says Elizabeth Goodman Artis, Editor-in-Chief of SHAPE. “We had that domino effect in mind when we envisioned our special SHAPE Slim Down section, which is dedicated to what most of us are looking for this time of year—to lose weight and get our health back in balance after the holidays.”
For the first time, SHAPE also created a companion The SHAPE Slim Down e-book, featuring a science-backed plan to lose 10 pounds in four weeks. The book delivers 80+ pages of expertly curated exercise and nutrition advice, step-by-step workouts, 40 nutritionally balanced recipes for every meal, curated playlists, training logs and more to help readers hit their goals. Across digital, Shape.com offers exclusive content, including the 30-Day #ShapeSlimDown Challenge incorporating workout moves and diet tips from the in-book program, plus exclusive video and calendar formats. The 30-Day Challenge platform provides rich, engaging social motivation to help followers conquer their New Year goals.
