Domtar to Close Wisconsin Mill, Cut 500 Jobs

Montreal-based Domtar, the largest producer of uncoated free-sheet paper in North America and the second largest in the world, announced yesterday that it will close its mill in Port Edwards, Wisc. in about six months, eliminating 500 jobs in the process. WWF-Canada and Domtar Further Commitment to Forest Conservation

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF)-Canada, a leading global conservation organization, and paper manufacturer Domtar have been partners since 2003, when Domtar pledged to achieve Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification for all of its forests and mills. Now, the two organizations have announced an agreement that they say solidifies their joint commitment to ensuring the long-term conservation of the Canadian boreal forest. Through the agreement, WWF-Canada will work with Domtar to continue to pursue FSC certification for all Domtar-managed forestland in Canada, as well as to identify important areas for protection on Domtar-managed lands.
