Can You Find Long-Lasting Trends in Publishing?
What are the current trends of our industry and which of these trends do you think are long-lasting? If you can find long-lasting trends in our industry, then you are also isolating your very own career track and trends. Or, at least, it seems that way to me.
What are you doing today? Did you do these same chores in the same way 5 years ago, or has your area of focus and area of responsibilities changed? I would bet you a pocket full of X-acto blades there is no department in your company that has not radically changed in the last 5 years. Do you think the changes are finally over and there will be a plateau of stability in your job definition?
We are undergoing a supreme metamorphosis, and I believe we, as an industry, will emerge stronger and better than we were before. I do not, in any way, make light of the current situations. It is traumatic and poignant as much as it is obvious and inevitable to most professionals. The current trend is to evolve, and have the paginated and digital magazine revolution. It is not the only piece, but it is a large piece of all of our futures. Are you ready?
No, it is not inevitable for every print title to disappear, as many printed publications will continue to do very well. But it is surely inevitable for many marginal titles.
Where once there were plenty of advertising dollars to support less-than-perfect printed editions, those days are gone. Only the strong and unique will survive this transition period. There is plenty of room for bad edit on the Web, but for print there has to be a reason to spend the money.
